Qwerp-splash.jpg

Qwerpline is a podcast from LoadingReadyRun recorded primarily by Graham, Alex, Kathleen, Beej, and Ian. It's "scriptovised" - first improvised by the actors, then later refined and edited. The podcast consists of a fictional morning radio show on the station QWRP FM, broadcasting from scenic Nsburg. The show is hosted by Graham ("Big G-Money") and Alex ("A-Train"), along with Derek the Intern (Beej), traffic reporter Richter Hammockslam (Ian), arts reporter Edith Slump (Kathleen), plus a broad slate of guests and local personalities. Art for Qwerpline is often provided by Featherweight.

A typical episode of Qwerpline contains segments on local news, the arts (with Edith Slump), local traffic (with Richter Hammockslam), plus a live on-location interview via Derek the Intern. Other recurring segments include the weather, sports, and the occasional caller who somehow manages to get through. Each episode begins and ends with a sponsor message.

History

According to LRRcast - AskLRR February 2016, Qwerpline is the fusion of Graham's QWOPline and Alex's Derpline, both of which were fake radio shows invented during Desert Bus. Alex put on a radio show in Desert Bus 5 entitled Derpline, the birthplace of the "A-Train" persona, where he did mock interviews with other members of the crew. For years after DB5 fans and callers continued to request Derpline, which led Graham during one of his shifts to put on QWOPline, a morning show equivalent of Derpline. One year later, both DJs joined forces and created the first ever episode of Qwerpline.

The biggest influences to Qwerpline predate the internet and are most notably: The Fireside Theater, Proctor and Bergman, Cheech and Chong, Round the Horne and The Goon Show. Due to its success Qwerpline has been favorably compared to Welcome to Nightvale but the LRR crew considers Welcome to Nightvale more as a similarly structured variety show than an inspiration as they had little prior exposure to it. The similarities between both shows are coincidental and comparisons arise as a consequence of both shows being the only ones of their kind rather than the shows being more directly related.

Characters

All characters are voiced by Graham, Alex, Kathleen, Beej, and Ian.

QWRP Staff

  • Graham ("Big G-Money") - Co-host of Qwerpline.
  • Alex ("A-Train") - Co-host of Qwerpline and current Aldersm'n of Therpston County.
  • Derek the Intern - 19-year-old intern who is frequently sent out for on-location work.
  • Edith Slump - QWRP's monotonous arts correspondent and local author.
  • Chet Buntsman - QWRP's first attempt at a sports reporter. Former coach of the Nsburg High Talcum Puffs girl's field hockey team.
  • Gus - QWRP station engineer

Recurring Characters

  • Lorna Schlitzwhistle is a local "expert" on pseudoscience and the supernatural. She keeps bees at her home in West Sump Acres and is very concerned about the effects of the "weefees" (wifi internet). She sells dreamcatchers on Etsy.
  • Ball Hinkley is a local business owner and author. He sells organic perfumes made from locally sourced items from around his home in East Sump Acres.
  • Raphael Crinklestouf is a local inventor and advocate for alternative fuels. He has used fermentation of human and other waste products to run an engine.
  • Granton Bumper, owner of Bumper Crop Farms and its ill-fated Corn Maze. Entered a large radish approximately 1 foot wide at the Harvest Festival competition. Grew the Bumper Crop Farm Corn Maze for Halloween, which led to the disappearances of 21 people. Later found religion and built a 20-foot "Jesus Cristo" out of corn husks, which was accidentally destroyed by Derek.
  • Woman from the Old Country, a local merchant who moved from the Old Country (unspecified, but hers), who crafts jams, aspics, and (presumably) other foodstuffs, out of questionable ingredients.
  • Ralph, secret Pipesman and member of the Nsburg Geological Society. Appears to be the spokesperson for the Pipesmen, or at least the most polite member.
  • Darren von Spront, a local (possibly self-proclaimed) tech wunderkind. He engaged in a patent dispute with Raphael Crinklestouf, and discovered a new (and extremely radioactive) element.
  • Kendra Tiltington, Director of Waste Management for Nsburg. She would really, really like it if people stopped dropping off non-recyclable things at the Nsburg Recycling Center.
  • Sandra Brentmore, President of the Nsburg Historical Rum Tunnel Society. Has a chronic case of laryngitis and/or allergies.

Minor Characters

  • Richard Therpston, founder of Therpston County and Therpston County Aldersm'n. Deceased.
  • Happy Gunderson, owner of a "spite house" in the middle of Highway 3. Frequently harassed by the Pipesmen.
  • Officer Steve of the Nsburg PD. Investigated the disappearance and reappearance of the pot holes from Highway 3 to the Shaughnessy. Runs the Nsburg Crimestallers tip hotline.
  • Dr. Melissa McFeels, coach of the Nsburg High Talcum Puffs girl's field hockey team. Always gives 110%.
  • Joan - QWRP station manager
  • Jeff - QWRP station accountant
